Our Colorado Springs Civics Bee was a great success

The Colorado Springs Civics Bee event was held at the Broadmoor on Saturday, March 28 ^th , 2025.

It was a huge success and such a pleasure to watch the students in action.

Special thanks go out to our event sponsors because without them this would not have been possible. The Daniels Fund, Stratus I.Q, Simple Works, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Mountain View Electric, Black Forest Party Rentals, and Nicollette Gorden.

Thank you to Tim Kealy for heading up this project, Michael Lordino, The Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce, Master of Ceremonies Major Jennifer Draper, USAF, Retired. Guest speaker, John Suthers, judges, Jeff Anderson, Carrie Geitner, Ben Kley, and event venue, The Broadmoor.

2025 El Paso County Kite Festival

The El Paso County Kite Festival , which will be celebrating its 4th year this June. This free, family-friendly event takes place on the Saturday before Father’s Day, June 14th, at Falcon Regional Park and has grown significantly, with over 1,000 attendees in 2024 .

We are looking to expand our partnerships and are especially hoping to involve more businesses, organizations, vendors, and sponsors from the eastern portion of El Paso County, particularly Falcon. This is a great opportunity for local businesses to connect with the community while supporting a new beloved annual tradition.

We invite businesses and organizations to participate by setting up a booth and providing some sort of activity, game, or other offering to engage with attendees. This is a great way for businesses to reach the community while contributing to a fun, interactive experience for families.

Have you been following the progress on the Civics Bee?

The Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that for the 2nd year, they will be the host the local competition of the National Civics Bee.

Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. After a distinguished panel of judges review the essays, the top 20 students will be selected to advance to their local competition: an in person live event featuring two rounds of civics questions followed by a Q&A round to test their civics knowledge. The Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce will host its local competition in the spring of 2025. The local finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including prizes worth at least $500 for the first-place student.

Where has the time gone?

Here it is, getting close to April and I realized there have been some important events that I did not bring up.

Sorry about that but, it would seem that work, family, normal chamber business and the Civics Bee has taken up all of my spare time.

For those that didn't know, the Eastern Plains Chamber of Commerce in coordination with the U.S Chamber of Commerce and the National Civics Bee hosted the local event at the Broadmoor on March 16th.

It was quite a process for middle school students across El Paso County to qualify for the live event. We had 20 qualifying students at the live event and the 3 winners from that day will advance on to the state event sometime in May in Denver.

An enjoyable experience and fun to watch the kids compete.

Volunteers Needed for the El Paso County

Colorado State University Extension Advisory Committee

El Paso County, Colorado, February 8, 2024 - The El Paso County Board of Commissioners is seeking community-minded citizen volunteers to serve on the El Paso County Colorado State University Extension Advisory Committee. Applications for the open position are due by February 16, 2024.

The CSU Extension Advisory Committee is currently seeking several volunteers who represent the following:

Horticulture/Natural Resources
Youth Development/4-H
Agriculture
Family and Consumer Science (2 positions open)
Food Systems and Natural Resources
Community at Large

The mission of the El Paso County Extension Advisory Committee is to promote, advocate, and support the County’s Cooperative Extension programs and staff by developing and implementing a strong marketing strategy that results in educating community officials and providing information flow between county citizens and CSU Extension.

The CSU Extension Advisory Committee consists of 12 members appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for three-year terms. Terms are limited to two full consecutive terms.

The committee meets on the first Tuesday in the months of February, April, September, and November at 6:00 p.m. Locations vary but meetings are typically held at the Extension Office, 17 N. Spruce St., Room 224, Colorado Springs, CO.

Get your comments in now – the public comment ends February 12th!

El Paso County is updating its Major Transportation Corridors Plan, which reflects the County’s need for future improvements to transportation infrastructure. It recommends a list of prioritized projects that the County can pursue as funding is available. The plan has a long-term outlook and is updated approximately every five years. Input from earlier phases of community engagement showed that safety, bike/pedestrian facilities and connections, and roadway improvements are valued by stakeholders and the public.

The draft MTCP recommends improvements to major roads in the county including, road upgrades, road widenings, new roadway connections, and bike and pedestrian projects.

The draft MTCP is ready for your review. You may submit comments in three ways:

We are pleased to announce that the El Paso County Commissioners will be honoring our local small businesses with a proclamation recognizing Small Business Saturday at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. We would like to extend an invitation to the local Chamber of Commerce to attend the open BOCC meeting for this special proclamation. PPWFC offers Employee Development Funding

to businesses in El Paso & Teller counties

With recruitment and retention an ongoing challenge, the Workforce Center brings good news:

They’re offering $160,000 in funding for companies to train/upskill their current staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 11, 2023 – The Pikes Peak Workforce Center has $160,000 in Employee Development Funds to award to companies who want to train or upskill their current employees.

Made possible by the federal Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act, the funds must be used to provide training to employees to retain a skilled workforce or avert the need for layoffs.

Preference will be given to in-demand industries, such as information technology and cyber security, manufacturing, health care, hospitality and tourism – and to companies whose training leads to expansion of duties for employees.

Options for training include work-based, virtual or classroom training for current employees that will increase the competitiveness of both employees and the business. Employers choose the training that will best meet the needs of their company and their employees.

Past examples of training include:

Advanced programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
Value stream mapping
Customized ISO
Rapid cycle product innovation
AC/DC electricity
Electrical schematics
Motors and controls
Advanced hydraulic
Multi-industry systems technician (MIST) programming
Lean manufacturing

Total productive maintenance (TPM)
Business soft skills training, including focus on conflict resolution, strategic planning, resiliency training, critical thinking and problem solving

“This is a wonderful opportunity for companies in El Paso and Teller counties,” said Pikes Peak Workforce Center Communications Manager Becca Tonn. “We hope a variety of businesses and nonprofits will apply to receive this special funding and improve their economic viability by upskilling or training their employees.”

Public invited to comment on El Paso County Road Safety Plan

Plan highlights safety improvements, education and enforcement

El Paso County, Colorado, July 12, 2022 - El Paso County is pleased to announce the release of its draft El Paso County Road Safety Plan. The El Paso County Department of Public Works, along with County partners, stakeholders, residents, and the County’s Road Safety Plan consultant, worked together to develop this plan to help make roads safer and reduce deaths and serious injuries on county roads.

As part of this effort, El Paso County conducted a detailed analysis of current safety and crash trends in the region and identified priority roadway types for safety improvements, education, and enforcement priorities. The El Paso County Road Safety Plan will serve as a guide for the county and partner agencies in implementing recommendations based on an innovative data-driven approach to traffic safety.

The draft El Paso County Road Safety Plan is online for public review from July 12 through August 12, 2022. El Paso County encourages the public, especially El Paso County residents, to review the Road Safety Plan and provide public comment by emailing DOTSafetyPlan@elpasoco.com .

After the public comment closes on August 12, 2022, the plan will be updated and presented to both the Highway Advisory Commission and the Board of County Commissioners before it is reviewed and voted on. The plan is expected to be finalized by November 2022.

Annual Great American Clean-Up

Good morning EPCC members,

It's that time of year again! The Great American Clean-up and the Chamber of Commerce board members will be there .

This is a fun event put on by El Paso County Parks.

If you are interested in joining us as a part of our group, respond to this by email to, board@easternplainschamber.com.

Here's what to expect

Where: Rock Island Trail Head off McLaughlin Rd. Google Map Rock Island TH

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

We will meet at 9:00 as a group to have a safety meeting, sign waivers, split into groups, and choose our zones. We will then meet back at the trailhead at 11:15 to collect your bags, do a head count, and take some photos.

What to bring/wear:

Required

· Water bottle. We will have a water jug that you can fill them with

· Comfortable and durable closed-toe shoes. There may be mud in the places you wish to remove trash. Boots recommended but not required.

Suggested

· A wagon for a large group. Not required but nice if you have a lot of bags.

· Wear sunscreen, it looks like it will be 65 degrees and sunny that day! Yay!

· Gloves if you have them. We will provide gloves but sometimes it’s nice to have your own.

· Hat

· Long Pants. You might be walking around in brush.

· A snack. We will have a granola bar available for everyone. If you have a dietary need, please plan accordingly.

Safety Guidelines and Waivers:

· Attached to this email is the Acknowledgment of Risk and Release Form. I will have copies of this form and some pens at check-in. If you would like to print it out and bring it with you, this would speed up check-in. You can also sign it and email it back to me.

o ADULTS SUPERVISING CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT THEIR OWN, please have the child’s legal guardians sign the large group form and either bring/email the large group form or have the guardian email me a signed form.

· All youth/child volunteers aged 8 years through 17 years must be supervised by a responsible adult aged twenty-one (21) years or older, with a ratio of one adult per four (4) youth/children. Children under the age of 8 must be paired with one adult at all times. All adult volunteers should work in groups of at least two (2).

· For adults supervising children who are not their own should have a list of emergency phone numbers to call for each child they are supervising and have access to a cell phone.

· Follow all safety guidelines discussed at the safety meeting.

El Paso County Attorney Diana May Appointed as District Court Judge for the Fourth Judicial District

El Paso County, CO, March 18, 2022 – The Board of El Paso County Commissioners is thrilled to have County Attorney Diana May appointed district court judge for the Fourth Judicial District (El Paso County and Teller Counties) by Governor Jared Polis.

“Diana May is the right choice for District Court Judge,” said El Paso County Board Chair Stan VanderWerf. “Diana is extremely talented, intelligent, hardworking, and knows the law. Interpreting the law and upholding justice is an enormous responsibility. She will bring experience, integrity, impartiality, a strong work ethic, and a principled approach to her new role. While this is a huge loss for us, I am delighted that she will continue to serve El Paso County and fulfill her aspiration to be a judge.”

Mrs. May has served El Paso County for 25 years, 11 years with the County Attorney’s Office and 14 with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. During her time with the County Attorney's Office, she led an office of 25 attorneys, defended the County against lawsuits, advised on employment law matters, and conducted employee and elected official trainings. As a team lead and chief deputy district attorney for the District Attorney's Office, Diana prosecuted felony, sexual assault, and homicide cases.

She has served on many boards throughout her career, advocating for public safety and crimes against women.

The boards included TESSA, Safe Passage, the Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) Program, and the El Paso County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Diana was awarded the 2005 "Women of Influence Award" by the Colorado Springs Business Journal for her commitment to pursuing justice for victims, and the 2014 Women’s Bar Association outstanding female “Portia Award.”

Mrs. May is a Colorado native, and cum laude graduate of Colorado State University and received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law. She is married to her husband Tony, who is a retired Colorado State Trooper. Together, she and her husband have one son Anthony (17).

Volunteer Needed for Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Community Advisory Committee

El Paso County, Colorado, March 18, 2022 – The Board of El Paso County Commissioners and the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments are seeking a community-minded citizen volunteer to serve on the El Paso County PPACG Community Advisory Committee. Applications for the open positions are due by April 1, 2022.

The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments (PPACG) Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is currently seeking one member.

The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Community Advisory Committee was formed to afford the citizens the opportunity to be continuously involved in regional planning activities. The CAC is an advisory committee to the PPACG Board of Directors on matters affecting regional transportation, air and water quality, and military impact planning.

CAC members are appointed citizen representatives from local governments in the Pikes Peak region, community-based Organizations that are granted memberships at the discretion of PPACG as well as the general citizen-at-large membership, which is open to the public.

El Paso County’s representation on the PPACG Community Advisory Committee consists of three members appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for three-year terms. Terms are limited to two full consecutive terms.

Committee meetings are currently being held virtually due to COVID precautions on the last Wednesday of the month at 3:00 p.m.

Concrete maintenance work at E Woodmen Road and N Meridian Road intersection starting on Monday, March 14

El Paso County, CO, March 4, 2022 – Starting on Monday, March 14, 2022, El Paso County will be performing concrete maintenance work at the southeast corner median island for the East Woodmen Road and North Meridian Road intersection. This operation will include the northeast corner for the East Woodmen Road and McLaughlin Road intersection. The maintenance work will consist of repair and replacement of the concrete median cover. The project is expected to be completed in two to three working days, weather permitting.

Lane closures:

Northbound right turn lane on N Meridian Road at East Woodmen Road
Westbound E Woodmen Road right turn lane onto McLaughlin Road

Safety Reminders:

• Reduce speeds in work zone

• Watch for workers, equipment, signs, and barricades.

El Paso County wishes to thank drivers in advance for their cooperation. Road closures will accelerate the safe and efficient completion of this project. Funding is provided through the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Now Available in Colorado

Governor Jared Polis announced that Colorado’s application for federal disaster area designation has been approved. Colorado small businesses impacted by COVID-19 can seek individual small business loans up to $2M as part of the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program. Small businesses throughout all 64 counties may seek SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

Free Tax Help Available in Calhan

Michelle Ray of the Pikes Peak Library District says that the AARP Tax Aide program will again be available in Calhan. The format and the location are changed because of the COVID pandemic. However, the system is still available and there is no charge for the service. You don’t have to be an AARP member and there is no age requirement to get tax help from IRS-certified volunteers. The only restriction is that the return must be for simple personal taxes with no complex additional forms required.

Patrons/clients can call 719-641-1948 to reserve an appointment. They can pick up an intake form at Calhan Library to complete in advance, and then bring their tax documentation to the Library to meet with an AARP Tax-Aide volunteer in the Calhan Library’s meeting room. They will have their documents scanned at their appointment and then they will leave. The volunteer will then prepare the taxes virtually. This will be available at Calhan Library on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., February 17 through April 14.

All COVID-related precautions will be in place (i.e. mask wearing, physical distancing, etc.).

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest volunteer-run free tax preparation service. Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified every year to ensure they understand the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code.

After clicking “Pay for Membership”, select the membership available at that time > Fill out the form (to create an account on the EPCC website) > Pay with your preferred payment method.
